The memorial marks the original site of the martyrdom. It is located on saltmarsh in Wigtown bay, but is now well above the tide line. At the time of the Martydom the river Bladnoch flowed much further north than it does today and the martyrs were drowned by the rising tide in the actual river course. The graves of the martyrs are in the nearby church and I have separate photos of both the church and the graves.
Tell me about John Mallais' painting. I have not heard of it before.
The painting is on display in the Walker Art Gallery, liverpool. See http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/online/exhibitions/faith/martyrofsolway.asp
Many thanks, very much appreciated since the kids left home don't have my quick access to this sort of information!!!!!
