Wikipedia says, that Vasco da Gama reportedly rested on the island Ibo in 1502. In the late 18th century Portuguese colonialists built the Fort. Today Vila do Ibo is a colonial ghost town.
As far as I know the landscape was not photographed by satellite. Google was flying some areas in the world by plane. That's why the quality of the pictures is so much better.
