Nafplion, A castle on the boat! - JUN. 2011 CONTEST

Bourtzi or "Castelli" in the Venetian or "thalassopyrgos" during the War of 1821, a small islet in front of the port of Nafplion, directly opposite the emplacement of the 'Five - Brothers' fully covered by the old Venetian Fortress which owes its name.

This fortress was built by the Venetians after the departure of Mahmoud Pasha in 1473, equipping it with newer guns. In 1502 changing the Venetians fortifications on the west side of Acronauplia an independent bastion with battlements ("Five Brothers"), connected him with an artificial arm which blocks the chain that binds and stood up Bourtzi to guard the port and city. Hence the name "Port of the chain".

After the Treaty of Karlovic (1698) erected by the Venetians in islet powerful tower and ramparts with cannons, thus creating the famous fortress, which now dominates the entrance to the port of Nafplion

During the Greek Revolution of 1821 Bourtzi occupied in 1822 by 50 gunmen and 150 "pyrovolistes (gunners) who are led by Hastings, Anerman, Haneke and Dimitrios Kallergis who were led by Major John Gkiournten Frenchman who cannonaded Nafplion by Bourtzi and managed to thwart the "clandestine" Food of the Turks besieged by the English ship.

Immediately subsequent decade, when the bloody Greek civil hostilities (1823 - 1833), twice forced the government to resort to Bourtzi for its security on May 25, 1824 and July 2, 1827.

After the arrival of King George I and, by mandate, in 1865 Bourtzi disarmed and became residence of the executioner's guillotine.

Finally, the establishment of the Tourism Organization Bourtzi turned into a tourist center (hotel and restaurant) operating lease with a private entrepreneur.
