This is an old Nike air defense missile battery. It deployed both the Nike-Ajax and the Nike-Hercules surface-to-air missile systems. These missiles were the last line of defense against a Soviet bomber dropping nuclear weapons on targets in the Bay Area. I just finished watching the episode of "California's Golden Parks" featuring this site and according to Huell Howser's guide this complex went out of service around 1974. And contrary to what the guide said at 3.2 mach it would take 103 seconds for one of these missiles to arrive over Sacramento, not 17 seconds.
