Martello towers were built to guard against an invasion by Napoleon. Each tower could see the next one and therefore could send signals by lighting fires. more information here

Oh my goodness Gerry!! I thought they only did that on 'Lord of the Rings' I had no idea that this was really done anywhere. Very interesting, I am glad you shared this fascinating information! BTW a very nice shot!! I can only assume that the pot of gold is somewhere underwater! ;-)) Bruce

That's a very bright rainbow, Gerry! The whole scene is wonderful, and the fire-warning system is fascinating! Did I just say the same thing as Bruce? Greetings, Ryan

Thank you everone!
Ryan Bruce Thank you for your interest in the local history. It has opened my eyes and piqued my curiosity. It made me ask the question “Why was the tower on Ireland’s Eye built on the landward side?”
Jean Non - Napoleon n'était pas stupide. Qui voudrait les Irlandais comme un ennemi!?

Great picture with that rainbow, and a piece of History too.
We had the Napolean Invasions in Portugal....but they had to retreat before come to Lisbon.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Gerry! A few days that I didn't see your gallery - and what happens, you have ordered all the rainbows of the season! Very beautiful! You deserve a yellow star for that one!
I have seen those Martello towers in many parts along the coast of Ireland, except North-East Ireland, but there it rained so much, that I didn't see anything in any case.
It seems as if Napoleon and his troops had been watched in Ireland by the British government on the sea side and maybe even more the Irish on the land side. This tower is in a very good state, compared to many others.
In connection with this the rainbow might be a nice symbol, especially at this place.
Greetings, May
