This is a shot of the famous Lone Cypress of Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula where they hold the famous PGA Golf tournaments many of you have no doubt seen on TV. The spot is often packed with photographers waiting for the perfect light and buzzing with tourist checking out what is possibly California's most famous tree. However on this (mother's day) Sunday there were only a few photographers which surprised me given the clouds that had been present all day. The Lone Cypress sits on a small outcropping of rock that extends slightly on to the Pacific Ocean just south of Monterey Bay. I've visited the tree since my short 3 year stay in Monterey back in 1983. Over the years the tree has changed a lot. The coastal cypress tree is constantly under attack from strong moist winds coming straight off the Pacific. I was told that at one time someone tried to burn it down and I suspect that is the reason it has since been fenced off, tied up with steel cables.
