The Imamzadeh Davood holy shrine near Tehran was a luring attraction for families who sought a refuge from the scorching heat of the capital. By the arrival of air conditioners and the accessibility of resorts at the shores of Caspian sea the shrine lost its former glory. Still, the longing for the past idyllic times attracts some worshipers via this wavy road. A skeptic traveler may spend his short vacation in a lonely camp on an unfriendly snake ridden territory!

Das Elburs-Gebirge spielt auch als – nicht immer exakt lokalisierter – Ort der iranischen Mythologie eine Rolle und wird in der persischen Literatur besungen. Es findet mehrfach in Firdausis Schahnama Erwähnung, unter anderem als Platz, wo der Zaubervogel Simurgh sein Nest hatte und Zal aufzog. Außerdem sollen die Könige Fereydun und Kai Kobad im Schutze dieses Gebirges aufgewachsen sein; Nowzar ließ seine Frau in den Elburs vor Afrasiyab in Sicherheit bringen und Kai Kawus hier die Divs zwei Schlösser für sich erbauen.
