There are records of licensed houses in the Downham area going back to 1399. The Assheton Arms was originally a farmhouse brewing beer for their workers, and the fireplace can be dated back to 1765. In 1872 it became the George and Dragon and in the 1950s it was re-named the Assheton Arms in honour of Ralph Asshetons contribution to government during the Second World War
