Oompie Help me out here, when I look at this beach on Google Earth I noticed that all the boats to the south of the wharf looked like they were streaming nets behind them while at anchor? I can only imagine they doing it to keep their bows into the current? Looks like there would be some exceptionally strong currents over and around that sand bar, does that explain the boat on the beach? Cheers Mike

Mike no these are not fishing boats. They are diamond dredgers. What you see is a thick pipe that is used to suck up sand from the ocean floor which is washed to reveal diamonds. That part of our coast and the south western tip of Namibia is very rich in diamonds and belongs mainly to De Beers. What is today the Orange River flowed in there millions of years ago and deposited a rich harvest of these little stones! You may find this site of interest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oranjemund Cheers!

Oompie Ah yes that makes sense... thanks for the web link it was fascinating. I remember a lot of Wilber Smiths characters spent time along this coast looking for diamonds! Cheers Mike

Papkassen Nope still looking for them!! No not stranded, when the tide pushes high enough they will float it again. Stranded means it is fixed and will stay there until rotten or broken up!
