Deconstructing Along Alaskan Way

Whenever I look at this photo it seems that the skyscrapers are growing out of the apartment buildings. Skyscrapers are much larger than they look - and I am not talking about just their height. Imagine tiling a flat surface with each floor separated from the rest - the area that it would cover. The downtown area of a city is always so much smaller in terms of the actual surface area than the rest of the city. It supplies the city with so many of the jobs, and the various neighborhoods and suburbs supply the people who fill those jobs. One can't exist without the other.
