The northern part of the Maledive islands belong to India and they are called the Laccadives (on earlier maps) or Laksadweep (thousand islands) in their own (perhaps Malayam) language. The water is actually 2-3 meters deep there. The colour comes from the shallow water and the white corall sands that are common on such corall islands. Check its areial view on Google Earth.
