Do we get to see a little bit more each time a picture disappears Gerry????? :)
This angle is wonderfully mysterious and I would really like to see where that the path/inner courtyard leads. :^))) hint, hint ;) The dropping gate adds a whole different dimension to the feeling of this picture. Is it original? and if so what's the history of this building?
Gerry the Irish LOVE to talk.....WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?

Ok Pam here's the inside
That's the rear of Malahide castle (with link). The 'dropping gate' (as you call it) is a portcullis. I had a look at it and the stonework certainly is cut for a portcullis. I'm not sure if the wood itself is the original.

Gerry, this is such a nice shot and well composed! the gate and the path is so inviting which I suppose is a good thing for the guy running the coffee shop! Bruce

Furthermore, if the coffee house owner thinks you will stiff him for the bill, down goes the gate!! It could be handy.. vicki

No the portcullis is to keep the fire breathing dragon in at night! I guess that is what Ryan might dream up ;-)

Riiight,I didn't think that through very carefully, but of course you are right! ;-)

That looks a bit like a trap. But anyhow I would venture to go through, just for curiosity.

Not a tourist trap! The locals use it also!

No, no, Gerry, I didn't mean a tourist's trap. I just thought it looked like a mouse trap with the spikes above, which I guess, are meant to rattle down against any intruders. - Of course, a mouse trap would invite a mouse first! ;)) A pretty picture in any case!!
Greetings, May
(Btw: I have put some Achill photos and will put some more shortly.)

'Tourist Trap' HaHa I get it now - very clever May! Maybe they lock them up in the dungeon for the night! The grounds are public area and quite nice for visitors and tourists alike. When the kids were young we would picnic over there in the summer and let them run around the open area. We never paid much attention to the castle, apart from watching the tourists taking photos and wondering what fascinated them so much!
