there was a ghastly wee annexe round to the right (maybe staff quarters in the original hotel). My first year I had to share a tiny room with a muy unsimpatico wee tyke, until e generous Fügung des Schicksals enabled me to move into a bigger room in the main hotel with a reactionary young buffer stuck in the feudal system. There was a fag machine in the corridor of the annexe: one evening, about midnight, I was desperate for a fag and actually woke someone along the corridor to blag half-a-crown off them for ten silk cut. Happy memories (not!). There was a weird prof of political economy (scotch for economics) who used to check a sample of names each lecture (drone, drone – utter boredom & misery) to see if their owners were present; archaic, or what?

Hi David,
Glad you remember your time at St Andrews so clearly.
...And thanks for that heart-wrenching rendition of Glaudiamus Igutur!

Actually, the name of the hall is "John Burnet Hall" (on 't' not two). Check out: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25179038
I was a student there for two years, and I don't recall it being so horrible... Not a fantastic experience, mind, but not horrible.
