This is one of a few trees still standing that has been blasted apart by artillery fire during the fierce fighting to capture Hill 112 during the Normandy invasion.Rommel said whoever holds Hill 112 will hold Normandy. The battle to take the hill took place in July 1944. It was held by SS panzer divisions and was one of the most bloodiest battles of the Normandy invasion.
