When you find them in the mountains they are often trail markers, but on the beach like this they are merely decrative. I found a small one on this log and added on to make this one for some photos. I have many of them around my yard. Check out this link for some of the amazing work of Andy Goldsworthywho works with natural materials - his books and video are very inspriational.
