Where possible, wildlife trees should be left standing as valuable habitat for biodiversity. This is a large dead Douglas Fir tree on the South side of Matheson Lake. The scars on the trunk are evidence of Pileated woodpeckers foraging. Cavities for bats and nesting birds are produced over time and various fungi are assisting in the long decomposition process.
