What is the story behind that interesting building David?

BTW I can almost hear those waves as they come crashing in (I've had to draw on long ago memories of the coast for that ;).

Greetings from Canada, Pam

Pam,Saltcoats harbour was constructed in 1686 but the one in the photo will be a newer/extended one. Saltcoats got its name from the practice of boiling sea water to extract the salt. The salt industry gave Saltcoats world wide fame. Have a good day...

That makes sense David. I was expecting to hear it was built for protection so hearing this was an unexpected surprise.

Hi munchter thank you . this was one of those really wild days as you can see the sea was really raging and the waves were crashing over the top of the tower.
