ANOTHER PLANET..the lost world of Saltwick Bay ;)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

This promontory at Saltwick Bay has fascinated me all my life..It is a geological wonder since what you are looking at is the ancient sea-bed of some enormous ocean..The flaky shale alluvial deposits contain millions of fossils of creatures that once swam in the sea. Fossil hunting is a very popular activity. There are seams of black Jet, a hard coal-like substance that can be cut, carved and polished and set into gold and silver jewellery ..There are several craftsmen in the locale who are involved with this highly skilled artwork.

The area was/is rich in mineral deposits, including ironstone..Where these seams become exposed to sea air, as can be seen in the middle-right of the photo, the iron oxides (rust) appear as a reddish coating.
