ANOTHER PLANET..the lost world of Saltwick Bay ;)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

This promontory at Saltwick Bay has fascinated me all my life..It is a geological wonder since what you are looking at is the ancient sea-bed of some enormous ocean..The flaky shale alluvial deposits contain millions of fossils of creatures that once swam in the sea. Fossil hunting is a very popular activity. There are seams of black Jet, a hard coal-like substance that can be cut, carved and polished and set into gold and silver jewellery ..There are several craftsmen in the locale who are involved with this highly skilled artwork.

The area was/is rich in mineral deposits, including ironstone..Where these seams become exposed to sea air, as can be seen in the middle-right of the photo, the iron oxides (rust) appear as a reddish coating.

DiggaTwigga~~~I greet you warmly Digga ;) good to see you again!

Alina Sbitneva~~~Thank you for your good comment Alina.....UK is a land of many contrasts and thankfully, because it is a compact and heavily populated island with good roads and public pathways, much our countryside is accessible. There are several designated National Parks, these are wide open areas of great natural beauty for everyone to enjoy!.

Mahdi Kalhor~~~Good to see you Mahdi ;) Yes, this is just two kilometres from my home...The geology is quite unique..Over many milleniums, the raging seas have eroded the various rock formations exposing layers of what was once the ocean bed. This indicates massive tectonic plates activity elevating the western edge of Europe.

At this site, one can find fossilised deposits of tree and fern growth..the archaeological evidence suggests that the UK was at some point, much hotter, similar species can be found growing in the jungles of equatorial Africa today. Mineral deposits, such as iron ore, alluvial shale deposits, jet and alum give the outcrops on this promontory its unusual discolouration and texture!

pivatana~~~Greetings Holger ;)~~~~Most people who discover this unique location are astonished by its pre-historic appearance..One can easily imagine living here in the Jurassic period..Dinosaurs must have roamed these lands in great numbers and fossil hunting is a popular activity along this coast!

Perhaps you could explain in a PM about your concerns regarding the rape of your land.. Many thanks for your evaluation!

To you all, I express my warm and sincere thanks for your friendly visits, your likes and precious comment
