What's the story of Narragansett?

Pennington, on December 16, 2007, said:

Narragansett is both the town in Rhode Island where this 1977 three-ton limestone sculpture by Robert Carston stands and the tribe of Chief Canonchet, whom this statue honors. The poignant story of the friendship and betrayal of the Narragansett and early European settlers is typical of many such stories across the United States.

...how much has been done to redress the apparent injustices suffered by Native Americans, or are there ongoing programs to give them a higher and a more positive profile in today's America?

Indeed, Narragansett is to be commended for putting up a statue, such as the above, to honour Native Americans. Well done !!

It is hard to know how different life would be had the past been different; harder yet to redress the past.
