Medieval Romanesque Sculpture…

Voussoirs

In the churchyard at the S side of the tower 11 voussoirs have been formed into an arch. Voussoir 5 has no surface decoration, voussoir 7 is barely readable and there appears to be a fragment with pellet decoration wedged between voussoirs five and six. The rest of the voussoirs are carved with two rows of centrifugal chevron lateral to the face, with cogwheel edge. The chevron is of the profileroll/hollow, with a fine roll flanking the hollow.

Hi Jethro

This was the second time that I read the explanation, and I was still non the wiser!

There are not many places in England where you would not come across a church, but over your back yard it seems it would take an eternity to find one.

Of course the goodness of the people is not measured by the proximity of churches. Come to think of it, it would be a great culture shock for me to have to walk more than say 5 miles to the nearest ale house!

All the best Peter

Clear as mud mate! This does not look part of the wall behind which is strange as the dictionary implies it is the lower part of an arch.

Hi Kenny

I think the Church dates from the 1800's and was built upon the site of the original Church of the 1100's.

These things have been preserved as an arch.

All the best Peter
