The markings say "50 EIRE". Markings like these were created all along the Irish coast to inform aircrews coming in from the Atlantic that they were approaching neutral territory.
The lighthouse is on the hightest point of the island, and could be seen from all directions. It was decommissioned in 1978.

I have tried to find more info about this lighthouse, but haven't found a lot. The closing date I gave in the first comment turns out to be totally wrong, it was closed down as early as 1853, after only 35 years of service. The markings in the nearby field, however, are from WW2. Inside the living quarters, there's a commemorative plate of John F. Kennedy, making it seem like the house was in use sometime after 1960, so I have been chronologically confused... Maybe you need to check out some earlier listings? Sorry for the wrong information!

The square building to the left of the lghthouse is actually a signal station that communicated with Mutton Island (Clare) and the Connemara coast, as well as several Martello Towers. It was built following the 1798 rebellion when an invasion by Napoleonic forces was feared. -- sorry, don't know about the lighthouse
