The large black and white balloon is a theatrical light, filled with helium. This gives a much better representation of moonlight than a traditional floodlight would.

Cool! It's always fun to see the "magic" behind the movie.
Of course besides providing an interesting "inside look," the photo presents a nice juxtaposition of old/new, or tradition/technology.
