I see you got some good shots in too. t'was the perfect moon close to Halloween especially since it was at it's closest to Earth for the Year. Next Years closest perigee will be Dec. 12

Many thanks Panamon - seems many of us did, but I'm envious of your shot! Your moon really looks like the Great Pumpkin and it's great with that deep blue sky!

kamaly but I had to lug a 13 pound lens around to get those shots. What don't we do for fun and joy :)

You just love to whine and complain Milan! At 6 foot and a bit (and not willowy) I doubt if it was that much of a hardship for you ;D
What a lovely moon and your composition is perfect Kamaly! :D

:-D))) thanks to you both lilypon and Panamon! While I'm still so envious of his huge orange moon, after hearing Panamon's story about his camera, I guess I'll be happy with my little S3 IS, even with its blurry full zooms! My old analog SLR with the wonderful zoom has been sitting on the shelf for years because I just got so tired of lugging it around! (and they don't take good photos if you don't have them with you!)

kamaly, this is just great! I bought my new S5 IS yesterday, but the full moon has not been cooperative. Why are your full zooms blurry?
kamaly, on November 4, 2007, said:
thanks for the comment on my moon Nawitka! I was lucky to be able to get this shot. A thin cloud cover moved in shortly after for the rest of the evening, so while we could still kayak at night, it was more to the glow of the moon without his big orange face.
Don't get me wrong - the S2/S3/S5 line is great, since you get so much camera, including really good quality (if short) videos, in a relatively small package. But at full zoom there can be a lot of haloing around things, making many photos unusable. Its very inconsistent when it will occur, though. There's some around the moon when you view this shot full sized, and if the upload server wasn't down, I'd upload a few others to show the problem. I'll try tomorrow.
For me, the haloing mostly seems to happen with great white egrets at a distance, and I've captured several with a few of them together taking off, but the halos ruined them. It's a common thing with non SLRs, and I'd read about it with the S3 before I bought the camera. But I think it also may be due to poor technique on my part, so now that winter's nearing, perhaps I'll read the manual... But obviously if the quality and zooms with these little cameras were perfect, no one would bother with $2000 DSLRs and 18" long 13 pound zooms!
And as far as the zoom capability for this little camera goes, its amazing. A great example is this photo, and the third one before it (photo 5464588 ) Both are of the same area, and the house in this moon photo is at the end of the land on the left side of the second. It even took me a while to realize that!

Nice shot, the moon low on the horizon always has a stupendous color. Regards, Marco.

Thanks Marco! This one seemed to be especially orange and huge. We all gasped when it poked its head over the horizon, and thought it was a nice Halloween treat. And I've since found out (thanks to Panamon, above) it actually WAS much bigger than usual because it was also the closest to Earth in its orbit.

Thanks, Volkan! If you go to this shot that's zoomed way out, you'll get a little bit of a surprise!

Heeelp Kamaly! A great moonrise last night, all full and orange, all caught on pixels, all garbage! Off to work now.

Guy - this is exactly where I was last evening, all hopeful for another nice full moon kayak, but once again I jinxed it, and again the view was like this without even catchable lightning...... weather looks more optimistic for tonight and tomorrow, though.
The moon's a toughie to figure out the right exposure, especially if you're trying to get a lot of scenery in it, too. Hopefully you didn't just delete them - Post one of last night's shots when you see this, and I'll try to give you some feedback. (I should be back before you head out to try again, about 10 my time. Won't bore everyone else on this comment list with a really long explanation here!)
