The pinnacles on which Meteora's monasteries are built stand in the shadow of the Pindos Mountains. The mighty labyrinth of dark grey stone, which provides an ideal retreat for devout monks in search of peace and solitude, has been fashioned by the sea as well as by wind and weather. Vertical grooves on the rocks were etched by the trickle of rainwater down their sheer faces. Horizontal lines are a memento from prehistoric times, when the waters of a sea that covered the plain of Thessaly lapped incessantly at the rocks .
