The "resident" pods of Orca Whales pass by the island every few days in the summer time. Always a joy and thrill to see them!

Great shooting Derek. I'll have to take the whale watching tour out of Bellingham to see the orcas now that the Victoria Star is no longer in business. + like

Wow...can only imagine what it's like to see them in the wild...gorgeous! Cheers, pear

Thanks Marty & Pear. I am fortunate to be able to see them from the shore (where this was taken) and sometimes from the water. Hope you get out to see them Marty. Perhaps a trip to the San Juan Islands is in your future? take care, Derek

WOW Derek,

you really are lucky to see these guys frequently!

I'm totally at loss with the GE acceptance policies. Really difficult to understand why this great shot hasn't been selected for GE. It surely illustrates a place, as these guys are frequent visitors and it is not even a close-up but most of the picture is showing the environment.

Best wishes, Timo

Thank you so much for your comments. Yes Renata, I never do get tired of the scenery here. So glad I left Toronto! :-). Hi Timo, this rejection puzzled me as well. C'est la vie. Best wishes to all, Derek

Thanks Els; This was in the early afternoon with the sun lighting the whale blows from behind. I agree that I am lucky to see these wonderful creatures many times a year. cheers Derek

Coooool, but shoulda hopped in for an underwater shot of them!

Derek Holzapfel on August 3, 2011

That may still happen one day sGm. Do you know why Killer Whales don't eat divers?

Derek Holzapfel on August 3, 2011

Gives them gas...... :-)

Gorgeous shot Derek! And as Timo says, a complete mystery on what the reviewers were thinking. What is the point of GE if photos like this aren't considered representative of an area???

oliviero dallaglio on August 4, 2011

Bella foto e posto incantevole. Votata. Ciao Oliviero
