'Scipio, being divinely driven since long ago against Carthage, bringing together seven thousand cavalry and infantry, sailed to Sicily taking along three hundred chosen healthy men, asking them to accompany him without arms. Having conscribed three hundred wealthy Sicilians ordered them to appear in a set day with the best possible armor and horses. When they arrived, he asked them if they wanted to be substituted in the conscription. All of them agreeing, he brought in the middle the three hundred youth unarmed and by them he indicated to be substituted. And they (the Sicilians) voluntarily turned over the armor and horses. So it happened that Scipio was surrounded by three hundred young Italiotes instead of Sicilians, splendidly furnished with horses and armor made at the expense of others, who were indebted at once for this favor and always ready to carry out any service.'
