Diglis River lock on the river Severn near Diglis Wier

Black and white photograph from 1892 of the tug 'Athlete' with the Droitwich salt barge 'Wye' on the River Severn at Diglis. 'Wye' has sideboards fixed and is therefore bound for Bristol. There is an empty lighter on the river which belongs to the Severn & Canal Carrying Company Limited and was used for carrying deals or grain. Several Severn & Canal Carrying Company Limited narrowboats are also visible on the river in the background. There is a man stood by the river on the left of the photograph. This is John Bradley who was the former Severn Commission Superintendent, his grandson also undertook this role...from the Canal and River Trust can be seen here
