Wild horses live on many of the barrier islands along the East Coast of the United States. They are thought to be descendants of Spanish horses which were shipwrecked in the 16th and 17th centuries as the ships of explorers ran aground in storms, especially in the dangerous waters near Cape Hatteras, NC.
