Cape Byron with its brilliant white lighthouse as seen from the main town beach. Byron Bay is renowned for excellent surfing and laid-back atmosphere. The town was named after the famous poet’s father, who had sailed the world in 1760’s. Unlike the Gold Coast, though equally geared towards tourism, Byron has retained its charm and style. One or two-storey buildings, with terraces and outer structures made of timber, have not yet been squeezed out by uniform holiday apartments. There is also refreshing diversity both in architecture and tourist-catering outlets, concentrated along the town’s artery Jonson St. The east side is dominated by the elongated Main Beach (photo), stretching for many kilometres to the north of the Gold Coast, whereas a white lighthouse at the top of a hilly cape guards the beach from the south.
