Birubi Point in Anna Bay down in the south of Tomaree Peninsula, NSW. Stretching 35 km west to Newcastle is the incredible Stockton Bight, the longest barrier sand dune in Australia. Dark clouds criss-cross the sky, shower after shower whips the ocean, and huge swells are battering the beach. Towering over the beach is the dune itself, stretching a good half-a-kilometre inland. The sand has been heaped high and wide as if the eternal sweeper insisted on keeping the immediate shoreline neat and tidy to make room for the latest arrivals from the ocean. The wind is hoovering the sand from the beach and keeps spitting it straight into your eyes. The grains are so fine that the sensation is not dissimilar to having someone piercing your face and eyes with sharp needles
