podgradnja pod otvorenim nebom

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The magnificent arched substructure of Diocletian's palace, called Podrumi (the Basements, Substructures), occupies an eighth

of the entire buildings, whose construction began at the turn of the 3rd in 4th century. Its purpose is to upgrade the coastal

slopes and leveling the ground level of the northern part of the villa-castle. Initially served as a gateway to the upper, a luxurious

imperial housing area.

Probably there was a manufacturing and storage space, partly residential area, especially for prisoners. In the Middle Ages the area

was filled in with various wastes, garbage, and partially converted into a septic tank. Fortunately, it was to preserve the Basements

of decay and difficult to repair remodeling. Were inaccessible to the public until the mid-20th century.

This is a scene from their east wing, partially collapsed in the Middle Ages. Through the seventies, has been cleaned and is open to

visitors, at the expense of some deleted medieval streets and buildings. Today, the Substructures of the Diocletian's palace are

premises for sightseeing, a variety of fairs, exhibitions, artistic performances and various other gatherings.

namijenjen razgledavanju, raznim sajmovima, izložbama, umjetničkim predstavama i drugim raznim okupljanjima.
