Mineral deposits at Almaden, 220km south of Madrid in the province of Ciudad Real, have been mined for over 2000 years and account for about one third of all the liquid mercury ever produced in the world.// This early example of a kinetic sculpture by the American artist Alexander Calder, a friend of Joan Miro, was originally designed for the Spanish Republican Government's pavilion at the 1937 Paris World Fair where it was exhibited along with Picasso's painting "Guernica".// Calder dedicated the sculpture to the workers of Almaden who fought the seige of the town by the fascist General Franco in the Spanish Civil War.
