No coroamento da parte rochosa do ilhéu de Almourol ergue-se as muralhas do castelo, é com certeza de origem romana como o atestam os objetos encontrados. O castelo foi reedificado, em 1171 por Gualdim Pais, mestre da ordem dos templários. Fez parte da linha defensiva do Tejo no tempo da reconquista da Península Ibérica implementada por D. Afonso Henriques. Todos os dez torreões mantêm a forma original, as ameias são fruto do restauro feito no séc. XIX.
