Photo of the spillway, "Glory Hole" as locals refer to it, in operation at Lake Berryessa, Napa County, Calif. This photo was taken thru a chain link fence, part of the fence is visible (blur) in the photo. The outside diameter of the hole is over 70 ft. The Hole is 15.5 feet below the top of the dam. If the water level reached the top of the dam, this spillway would have a water flow of over 48,000 cubic feet per second. Put another way, if your vehicle has a 15 gallon fuel tank ( 56 liters), that would be 24,000 tanks of gas each second going thru this hole at maximum capacity. The water level, in this photo, is less than one foot (30 cm) over the spillway top. More info link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monticello_Dam

I wonder what it would be like to see that thing! Truly amazing, you think one would survive if he falled down?

The fall being 280 feet and being shot out at a right angle, and survive? I think just the water pressure would be enough to finish you off. This is a photo of the outlet of the "hole" during construction. http://www.trophybassonly.com/2825ff40.jpg

I calculated that it would be 1344m3 water or 1344000Kg/s going that hole! 1344Tons/s. That would be ~1200 small cars going out that hole per second too! hehe! Gosh!

Before they put up the fence around the bottom on the creek side, kids used to skateboard in the pipe or outlet of the glory hole. (when it was dry, of course.)
