Tahquitz Peak and Lily Rock

Tahquitz Peak is named after the legendary Chief Tauquitch (Tahquitz) of the Sobaba Band of the Luiseño People, or Payomkowishum. Chief Tauquitch was known to be a tall handsome chief. When the maidens of other chiefs went missing, Chief Tauquitch was suspected and later confirmed to be responsible. He was condemned to death by fire. As the flames rose up around Chief Tauquitch he disappeared in a great spark of flame. Obviously he was a demon and is believed to live in a cave inside Tahquitz Peak which can be confirmed by the occasional rumblings that occur there. Tahquitz Rock (or Lily Rock) is the location where the Yosemite Decimal System “rock climbing scale” was developed in the 1950’s and is still used in the United State and Canada to this day. Lily Rock is named after Lily Eastman, daughter of Dr. Sanford Eastman, a pioneer of the area in the 1870’s.
