What is this place?

Timma,
Thanks for visiting! This is known as "Bald Knob Cross" because it is a giant cross built on top of "Bald Knob" - one of the higher hills in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois. Check out the view of the Shawnee Hills from here! (This may not seem impressive to a world-traveller but this terrain is most exciting within the state of Illinois!)
The cross has always been amazing to me because there really aren't that many people living down in that part of the state (compared to other parts of Illinois) and yet they managed to band together and raise funds to build the cross. Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair in recent years. I think it is in even worse shape now than how it appears in this photo which was taken in August of 2006.
Here is the Wikipedia page for the cross.

Hi, a very impressive cross, it's a great shame that it has fallen into disrepair. I hope that they can save this splendid cross and that people can join in the Easter services again. Regards, Anita

It really is impressive. It can be seen from very far away and is a nice beakon. It would be great if it could be restored! I would hate for us to lose this unique treasure.
