Helsinkiben a felszínből alig kiemelkedő, mindenfelé látható csupasz gránitsziklákat a jégkorszaki gleccserek szállították mai helyükre. Egy ilyen gránittömb közepét robbantotta ki és alkotta meg 1969-ben a Sziklatemplomot két fivér, Timo és Toumo Suomalainen.
A templom kör alakú, falai a csupasz sziklák. Természetes megvilágítását a tetőben a 13 méter magasra emelt réz kupola és a fal közé illesztett 180 üvegtábla biztosítja. Az utcáról alig látható, csak a kupola emelkedik ki a sziklából.
A nyers sziklafalak elképesztő akusztikája folytán nem csupán az evangélikus istentiszteleteknek, hanem koncerteknek, előadásoknak is helyet ad és évente félmillió turista látogatja.
