The church is that of St Cuthbert, between Prince's Street Gardens and Lothian Road. The church beyond it is that of St John, which is on Prince's Street. The substantial browner building to the left rear is the Caledonian Hotel. The railway between Waverley and Haymarket stations in the foreground, and the downward facing angle of the photograph, suggests it is a telephoto shot taken from Edinburgh Castle.
