Good to be back in the water again now that summer is almost over. This a "young/small" Giant Red Sea Urchin. Nice to see an healthy abundance yesterday.

I'm glad you are getting out again! We supported the Cortes Island diving community by hiring a diver to find out why our anchor was stuck. The anchor was down at 20 meters. Turns out we hooked both a disused telephone cable that ran across the bay and some nylon line attached to a forgotten mooring. Our diver freed us quickly and didn't seem to think 20 meters was much of a big deal. That's the first time that's happened to us!

Hi Derek,

very nice shot of a sea urchin. I have never seen a red one.

Best wishes, Timo

I wonder what porcupines think of these things?

Derek Holzapfel on September 7, 2011

Thanks Nawitka, Timo and sGm; Sounds like a nice tangled mess Nawitka. In some spots it is a real mess on the bottom from old moorings.
Timo - we have red, purple and green sea urchins. Green Urchins are often harvested for "uni". sGm - I have a few one liners, but not appropriate here :-). Rest assured that Urchins and Pork's would enjoy needling each other.
cheers Derek

Hi Derek, just viewed all your latest photos as a slide-show! Didn't realize it's been so long since I stopped by, because there many wonderful photos I hadn't seen yet! This one is very beautiful, and so are all the others you've taken under the sea! It's amazing how much beauty is "hiding" under the ocean! Thanks for showing us all these miracles! Best regards, Anne
