UDBINA: iznad bojnoga polja

This is the Church of Croatian Martyrs in Udbina, Lika Senj County.

Its construction began on the 9th September 2005, the ritual consecration of the church will be on the 10th September this year.

It was built in the traditional Croatian sacral architectural style.

........

On 9 September 1493, beginning at 9 am, in just over an hour there was killed around 10,000 Croatian soldiers in the nearby

Krbava field (it can be seen in the picture's background). It was a clash of Christian Roman Catholic and the Islamic armies, known

as the Battle of Krbava. Many historians have taken this particular event as the beginning of the Hundred Years' Croatian - Ottoman

War, which really lasted 150 years. The war ended with widely celebrated victory of the Croats and crushing defeat for the Ottomans

in 1593, in the Battle of Sisak, with the loss of 8,000-20,000 troops on the Turkish side (depending on the historical origins of

the two sides).

.........

This church is a memorial shrine and pilgrimage site for those who remember the Croatian defenders through the distant and recent

turbulent history of the Croatian state. Counting also the Croatian War of Independence and all other wars and battles through

the centuries.
