Due to the fact that Mellum doesn't provides a jetty, the only way to visit the island goes like this: take a little ship from the harbour of Hooksiel in order to approach the island. You have to navigate through a narrow shipping channel during falling tide. Near the edge of the tideland you have to disembark to a little motorboat which takes you to the mud flats (wet feet guaranteed!). From here you have to walk approx. 1 mile, crossing several tideways, to reach the beach of Mellum.
