This picture shows a memorial stone which reminds of the construction of the diked area in 1940 to 1942 by german armed forces. The oval shaped diked area was build by the "Marine Festungs-Pionier Bataillon 312" (naval fortification engineer bataillion). The memorial stone itself is located at the southwest corner of the diked area just 100 m from the south beach. In order to construct a solid dike, it was neccessary to get a lot of grass turfs from the mainland. The transport of this grass sodes was responsible for the introduction of the one and only mammal on Mellum: the common vole.
