What a most unusual place. This is great. I'd love to know more about it.

Hi MaryAlice. This is actually an island on one of the largest lakes in Northern Ireland. The monastic site dates back to the 6th century and the round tower to the 12th. These places were selected for their isolation and safety. I have included a web address where you can get more information.

Very best wishes from Ireland.

Sean.

Sean: Thank you so much for sending the wonderful informative site and for your comments as well. I am intrigued! Is this close to you? Oh, how I would LOVE to go there. Can you actually climb up in the tower? The remains of the church were just beautiful on that site. It's hard to believe that something so old even has anything left still standing. What an amazing little piece of history you have shared with me today! I enjoyed it more than you know. Thank you so much.

Sincerely, MaryAlice

You are very welcome MaryAlice: fact is, when you are in Ireland everywhere else is close these days!! Devenish is about two hours away by car from my home. This site is open to visitors: you cross to the island by motor launch and access to the tower is allowed. The lake is large and has the characteristics of a sea and is often very rough. I could imagine the inhabitants being marooned here for most of the winter and relying on their stores for survival.

Best wishes,

Sean.
