The concrete strengthening blocks manufactured by Hawes himself are evident here. At a time before air-conditioning, he always designed buildings with forethought to the often harsh climate of the Mid-Western district. Imagine originating from the balmy climes of England and doing manual labour with vigour in those harsh Australian conditions, as Hawes did.
