...Phillippe, it is the type of contrast to which, even, it is difficult work to the native ones to get accustomed!!!

Philippe Meisburger on September 29, 2011

I know, but it puts us in so called "rich" countries (with several million people below the poverty level, but that's another story...) in some kind of trouble, as we don't know how those people live it, if they are angry against the people living in higher standard place or whatever, if they want some help from "the north" or, in contrary, if that help (or even the idea of that help) sounds like an insult to them.

It's anyway not a judgement towards them, but it clearly shows that something is wrong in that world.

OK, such living is for sure made possible by the climate (in central Europe, the cold winters would make such a living condition sound like an almost certain death), but still, it gives a strange feeling...

... I am sure almost that, at least in my country, they are the seedbed of votes for populist governments and demagogues. Another reasoning would be absurd if we bear in mind that does not talk each other about a poor country...

Philippe Meisburger on September 29, 2011

Demagogues and populists are everywhere. We're gonna have presidential elections in 7 months and I hear them all day long on TV (on every side of the political game).

Of course Venezuela isn't poor by itself, unlike any country of that region actually, but this makes massive poverty even more painful as it shows something goes wrong, whatever.

Polifemo ( * ) on September 29, 2011

Philippe Meisburger on September 29, 2011

Those who intentionally keep the poverty as it is (and who usually aren't poor themselves... far from it actually) should know that this is actually the worst place as when you have it all, you might loose it all. Not when you own nothing.

As usually, the right way should be something in between, without excessive poverty nor excessive wealth. But that's something many leaders didn't understand yet (altough what happens in Iceland nowadays - and that strangely gets very little media coverage - is very hope bearing).

Hola,**.
