These eight photographs and another two, uploaded before, were taken at the Tall Ship festival in city of Waterford in 2005. During four days all the visitors were welcomed aboard and given answers to all their questions. I asked about the discs threaded on the ropes - these with the funny cats - and got an answer that their purpose was to stop rats from climbing onto the ship:). Of course the discs were there more for tradition than for necessity. And for decoration.

Very interesting! Thank you, Inessa for all the beautiful photos and for the story about the discs. Very simple and clever! That reminds me of the storage houses in our Canton Wallis. They use a similar system.

Best wishes, May
