Downstream - the 1880s concrete dam and weir at Elderslie Estate

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The weir and its two small lakes was built in 1883. The lakes were a source of enjoyment and recreation for the Reid family and visitors, and although they are drained now, the landowners would like to re-instate the stoplogs (gates) and have the ponds refilled.

Note that in Geoffrey Thornton's seminal book on early NZ concrete, Cast in Concrete, he thought that the weir might date to the 1870s, however the current property owners assure me the weir and lakes were constructed 1883.
