Hest Bank, just north of Lancaster, marks the only location where the UK's West Coast Main Line lies in sight of the Irish Sea. In the early evening of a glorious day a Glasgow-bound Virgin West Coast Pendolino, checked by a yellow aspect signal, crawls past the steam-era BR London Midland Region-designed signal box, due to be abolished next year. 27/9/2011
