I wonder when this memorial was erected dear Ian. It seems so fresh in the memory still. The fact that there are photos of the victims of the tragedy makes it all the more personal for the relatives. It is always sad to see tings like this.

Warm wishes, Amelia

Dear Amelia,

The pain of this tragedy is still etched in the lives of many here. A national trauma like this is not something that one can just move on from. Mothers and children perished together, men and women, Tongans and some overseas visitors went to a watery grave in the deep ocean, due to negligence, intentional risk taking, and many failures to comply with rules and guidelines.

The Royal Inquiry brought the truth into the open, and a measure of justice has been executed, but the trauma continues. This memorial wall was erected last year, 2010, a year after the tragedy.

Several of the relatives of the victims are known to me. The experiences of some of the survivors still haunts them and those of us who have heard their stories of a few minutes during one dark night.

Thanks for your empathy,
